UPDATED – August 5, 2020 – Quest CE, premier provider of compliance training and tracking technology solutions, today announced the release of its new Code and Standards Certified Financial Planner (CFP) Ethics course. This course will satisfy the new standards taking effect October 1, 2019.

The new course, “Ethics CE: CFP Board’s Revised Code of Standards,” was derived directly from the CFP Board’s new Code and Standards and ensures that CFP professionals remain well-versed in comprehensive financial planning once they have obtained CFP certification. CFPs are required to complete thirty credit hours of continuing education (CE) accepted by the CFP Board every two years, including two hours of CFP Board-approved Ethics CE. This course will fulfill the two required ethics training credits.

“We’re excited to be one of the first providers to add the CFP Ethics course to our catalog,” said Quest CE’s VP of Operations and Compliance, Adam Krenke. “Not only are we ahead of the pack, but we’ve also included interactive elements to make this required course more engaging for our users.”

The course largely focuses on the changes made to the Code and Standards including: an expanded application of fiduciary duty, updated duties to clients, modernized practice standards, a revised definition of financial planning, a new process for bankruptcy and enhanced reporting requirements. The 120-minute course contains several case studies and knowledge-check quizzes throughout. It’s rounded-out with a required program evaluation and a 20-quesiton final exam.

Please note that Quest CE has retired the course, “Ethics for the CFP Professional: CFP Board’s Standards of Professional Conduct,” from its course catalog on September 30, 2018. CFPs are encouraged to take the new course going forward.

Why has the CFP Board Implemented new Code and Standards?

In December of 2015, the CFP Board began the process of reviewing their current ethical standards which included several public forums and two public comment periods which led to more than 1500 written comments. On March 29, 2018, the CFP Board announced that its Board of Directors unanimously approved the new Code and Standards. This set forth the ethical standards for those seeking CFP certification and current CFP professionals. Anyone who falls short of the new standard will run the risk of being barred from becoming certified or lose their certification.
